Laytown & Bettystown Golf Club
Stretching two miles from Mornington to Laytown, this sandy beach is known for its summertime horse racing. However, for golfers, the real attraction lies in the rolling dunes known as “the Burrows.”
The course at Laytown & Bettystown Golf Club was shaped by Robert “Bobby” Browne, who served as the club’s professional from 1967 until his passing in 2015. A mentor to Ryder Cup players Des Smyth and Phillip Walton, Browne played a pivotal role in refining the course over nearly 50 years.
Originally established as a 9-hole course in 1909, the layout expanded to 18 holes in 1917, with subsequent modifications creating the present design. At 6,450 yards, the course is a classic links challenge, featuring humps and hollows, narrow green entrances, blind approaches, and an out-and-back routing that follows the natural contours of the land. Notable highlights include three par threes (holes 6, 9, and 16) and three short par fours (holes 2, 14, and 17), offering a test of precision and strategy.
Seapoint Golf Links
A premier championship course overlooking the Mourne Mountains and the Irish Sea, Seapoint Golf Links has hosted the Irish PGA Championship and Irish Close Golf Championship. Originally designed by Ryder Cup Vice Captain Des Smyth and Declan Branigan, the course has matured into one of Ireland’s finest links experiences, featuring fescue greens and impeccably manicured fairways.

Padraig Harrington praised the layout, stating, “There is not a weak hole on the entire golf course.”

North
Ardglass Golf Club
Perched atop dramatic cliffs along Ireland’s northeast coast, Ardglass Golf Club provides breathtaking views and a memorable links golf experience. Just under two hours from Dublin and about an hour from Belfast, the course is renowned for its challenging layout, ever-present coastal winds, and fairways that embrace the rugged coastline.
With origins dating back to 1896, the course evolved from a 7-hole layout into its current 18-hole format, featuring strategic improvements over the decades. The Irish Sea plays a role in at least eight holes, making Ardglass unique among Irish links courses.
Royal County Down
Situated within the Murlough Nature Reserve, Royal County Down is one of the most naturally stunning links courses in the world. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Mourne Mountains, the course stretches along Dundrum Bay, offering breathtaking vistas from nearly every hole.
The course is famed for its narrow fairways, challenging bunkers with overhanging fescue, and fast, domed greens that demand precision. The ninth hole, a 486-yard par four, is among the most photographed in golf, requiring a tee shot over a massive mound and a second shot over bunkers to a raised green.
A true test of skill, Royal County Down has long challenged the world’s best players. The course record of 66 was set by Jimmy Bruen in 1939, and it remains one of the greatest links experiences for golfers of all levels.

Donegal - Rosapenna
Old Tom Morris Course
Home to the Irish Legends Senior Tour 2021 & 2022
Architects: Old Tom Morris (1893), James Braid & Harry Vardon (1906), H.S. Colt (1912)
In 1891, while visiting Lord Leitrim’s estate, Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews—four-time Open Champion in the 1860s—discovered the potential for golf along this stunning Donegal coastline. Before returning to St. Andrews, he had laid out the first Rosapenna Links, seamlessly incorporating wide, rolling fairways and undulating terrain with exquisite greens.
In 2009, the Strand Nine was introduced to replace the original back nine, which crossed the main road. Designed by Pat Ruddy, these links holes now serve as the front nine, blending naturally with the Old Tom Morris Valley back nine along Tramore Beach, overlooking Sheephaven Bay. The course, running just under 7,000 yards, blends classic and modern design elements, offering a challenging yet scenic golfing experience.
“It is difficult to write with restraint about Rosapenna. The exceptional beauty of the surroundings is liable to interfere with unbiased criticism.” – Harry Colt, 1927
St Patrick's Links
Ranked #49 in the World’s Top 100 Courses – Golf Magazine 2023-24
Acquired by Rosapenna Golf Resort in 2012, St Patrick’s Links was reimagined by renowned architect Tom Doak and lead associate Eric Iverson. Built on a vast dunescape south of Rosapenna’s existing courses, the new 18-hole design is a masterpiece of modern links golf.
The layout takes players on a thrilling journey through towering dunes, with spectacular views of Sheephaven Bay. Wide fairways, natural bunkers, and unique elevation changes make this course unlike anything else in Ireland or the UK.
St Patrick’s Links has climbed to #49 in the Golf Magazine Top 100 rankings, breaking into the world’s Top 50 and Ireland’s elite Top 5 courses, alongside Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Ballybunion, and Lahinch.
Sandy Hills Links
Opened in 2003, Sandy Hills has matured into one of Ireland’s finest modern links courses. Unlike Old Tom Morris, who routed his course alongside the dunes, designer Pat Ruddy carved Sandy Hills directly through them, creating a spectacular challenge for golfers.
At 7,255 yards, Sandy Hills was built for championship play, yet multiple tee options make it accessible to all golfers. The routing takes advantage of the towering dunes, offering stunning views of Sheephaven Bay and a course that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
The back nine provides a particularly exhilarating test, with standout holes like the downhill par-3 7th and the sweeping par-5 8th. Sandy Hills has been praised for its purity as a links challenge, offering a relentless yet rewarding experience.
“A stunning modern links that funnels its way through centuries-old dunes, whipped by the Atlantic winds. A must-play for serious golf enthusiasts.” – Peter Acheson, Golf Digest Ireland
