Course Review
Karlstejn Golf Club
Overview & History
Karlštejn Golf Club, also known as Golf Resort Karlštejn, sits about 4045 minutes from Prague and offers a compelling blend of challenging golf and scenic surroundings. The original 18 holes were launched in 1993, designed by Canadian architects Les Furber and Jim Eremko—the same duo behind Spain’s Valderama and Cuba’s Varadero. This was followed by a further nine holes added in 2008 on Voškov Hill, maintaining seamless design continuity.
Set in a wooded, hilly landscape dotted with limestone formations, ravines, lakes, deep bunkers, and mature trees, the course is designed for “easy bogey but difficult birdie,” inviting players of different handicaps to enjoy the round together. In 1997, it hosted a four-day PGA European Tour event—notably won by Bernhard Langer with a final score of 240 (–20). The course record of 61 was set by Swedish pro Patrik Sjöland in the Chemapol Trophy.
Signature Holes
Hole 2 – Par 4 (Red/Original Course)
One of the more notable holes—a downhill dogleg that begins with a dramatic drop from tee to fairway. The green is tucked beside water hazards, a ditch in front, and a bunker on the right—making this hole a precise test of control.
Hole 14 – Long Par 3 (Blue or Black Course)
One of the standout par3s, where water features lurk on the right side. Accuracy off the tee is essential to avoid the hazard and reach the well-protected green.
Hole 17 – Par 5 (Hills Nine)
A long uphill challenge and dogleg left, this hole demands both distance and precision. The green is heavily bunkered and divided by undulation, making shot placement critical.
Hole 18 – Final Par 4
The finishing hole brings a climb toward the clubhouse. The second shot often requires overcoming significant bunkers, and the putting surface is known to be very tricky—demanding careful, controlled play.
Experience & Amenities
The resort offers three nines—Woods, Meadows, and Hills—which can be combined into various 18-hole rounds (e.g. Red/Black/Blue combinations) for variety and flexibility.
Facilities include a clubhouse with pro shop, restaurant (serving Czech and international cuisine), locker rooms, driving range, putting and chipping areas, and rental services for clubs, trolleys, and carts. A few golf forum users praise the stunning views of Karlštejn Castle and well-kept conditions.
