Cork Golf Club – Character Builder

This week, my travels took me to Cork to play in a CMAI Retired Managers event.

Cork Golf Club was founded in 1888 by prominent Cork businessmen. The original location was at Rathcooney Hill, above Glanmire village. The current site at Little Island was chosen in 1897 when Messrs. Maudslay, J.H. Gubbins, and Sharman Crawford spotted its potential while sailing in the adjacent estuary.

Course Architect Dr. Alistair McKenzie

After World War I, the club embarked on a major upgrade, entrusting the project to Alister MacKenzie—then regarded as the most creative golf course architect in Britain. He would later go on to design such masterpieces as Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne. His design at Cork incorporated his signature elements: undulating greens, large and free-form bunkers, and substantial contouring.

Measuring a robust 6,813 yards from the back tees, the course presents a formidable challenge, yet rewards smart play with the opportunity to post a good score. That said, we chose a poor day for golf, with frequent heavy rain and high winds- character building!

Approach to 3rd Green

The greens are small by modern standards and well bunkered. One hole that stuck out was the par-4 18th, a dogleg from left to right. With out-of-bounds on the left, it demands either a lay-up to the corner or a bold shot challenging the trees down the right-hand side. Either way, your task is not over, as the second shot is to a well-protected green. I wouldn’t want to be relying on a good score here to win a major club competition.

View from the Clubhouse to Pro shop, Putting Green & 1st Tee

The pro shop was well stocked with Cork Golf Club merchandise, as well as electric and pull trolleys. The course is relatively flat, and while buggies are available, I wouldn’t consider one necessary for most visitors.

Club Bar

This is a course that offers plenty of variety and the kind you would never tire of playing as a member. Consider staying for a meal—the clubhouse interior has recently been refurbished, and the food on offer is excellent. A great golfing day out.

The course is only 8 km from the centre of Cork city. If you have your clubs in the boot, you should definitely drop in and play.

My thanks to Gerry Coleman for organising the day, and to our host, General Manager Peter Loughnane.
