Killeen Course on Good Friday this year by a good friend

I was fortunate to be invited to play the Killeen Course on Good Friday this year by a good friend and member, Barry O’Sullivan, and to share the experience with my son. The approach to the course is nothing short of spectacular. As you wind your way through the property toward the clubhouse, the landscape gradually opens up, revealing stunning lakes framed by the backdrop of the mountains—an arrival that immediately sets the tone for what lies ahead. The clubhouse features a large and well-stocked pro shop, with something to suit all tastes and budgets. The staff were exceptionally warm, knowledgeable, and helpful, offering useful insights on both the merchandise and the course itself. Considering the very wet winter, the course was presented in excellent condition. The greens, while not yet at peak summer pace, were true and healthy, providing a fair but enjoyable test. On a blustery day, the course proved to be a real challenge for the handicap golfer—and so it was for our group. That said, I was pleased to return a score of 82, helped by a couple of birdies on the front nine. There are several standout holes, but the 18th is a fitting and memorable finale. From an elevated tee, you’re immediately drawn to the water running down the left-hand side—a feature that has recently been enhanced with attractive stonework and small bridges, adding both definition and visual appeal. With trees lining the right, accuracy off the tee is essential. Measuring 382 metres, this is no pushover, and the approach is equally demanding, with bunkers guarding a subtly undulating green. Walking off with a par here makes the post-round drink taste that little bit better. After the round, we dined in the clubhouse lounge on the first floor, which offers panoramic views across the lakes, mountains, and both courses at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. The food was excellent, and the hospitality was first class. Having hosted the Irish Open on multiple occasions, the Killeen Course has a proven pedigree and should be firmly on the itinerary for anyone planning a golf trip to this part of the Kingdom. Alongside the adjoining O’Mahony Course, it offers a complete package—ideal for a short golfing break, with plenty of off-course attractions to keep any group entertained.
