Well, wasn’t that exciting? Right down to the wire. I don’t think anyone of us saw that coming. Then up stands Shane Lowry to make a birdie on the 18th and retain the Cup for Europe. The Irish have a tradition of holing winning putts or key matches to win the cup including Christy O’Connor Jnr., Eamon Darcy, Philip Walton and Paul McGinley. It’s in our blood.
It should never have come to this. As I sat there watching the unfolding drama I was reminded of Brookline in 1999. We played all our big guns four times in the first two days and come Sunday they all ran out of gas. It was a similar situation yesterday where Rory played poorly, almost matched by Scottie Scheffler (who also played five matches), John Rahm getting slaughtered and Fleetwood losing to Justin Thomas on the last.
I can’t help thinking that the heckling from the US supporters was counterproductive. Sure, what was said was beyond the pale, but not only was it motivating for the European team, it was also embarrassing for the US side. We should bear this in mind when we host the Cup in 2027.
I thought Tommy Fleetwood really looked the part all week long. His swing looked awesome, connected and he flushed it. I think her will look back on the last 10 weeks with pride and confidence and will win a major in 2026.
The Ryder Cup needed a tight match to nullify a series of heavy wins for the home side. Luke Donald should be given the opportunity to Captain again in 2027, but failing that I would plum for Justin Rose. He was class all week and indeed in Rome and it would seem the perfect alternative candidate.
Who would you want to Captain the team in 2027????
