“I didn’t know there was golf in Czechia!”

It’s a reaction I hear all the time.

Only recently my dentist—mad keen on golf and forever travelling with his golfing buddies—asked what I was working on. When I mentioned Czechia, he replied with that now-familiar line: “I didn’t know there was golf in Czechia!”

And to be fair, that’s understandable.

Czechia doesn’t currently have household names on the DP World or PGA Tours, which can give Irish golfers the impression that the game there isn’t taken seriously. Alex Čejka the most recognisable Czech-born golfer, actually represented Germany throughout his career after emigrating at a young age.

But look a little closer and a very different picture emerges.

On the Ladies European Tour, Czech golf is thriving. Sára Kousková , Klára Davidson Spilková (Irish Open champion in 2022), Kristyna Napoleaova and Jana Melichová have all recorded wins, while rising stars such as Tereza Melecká, Patricie Macková and Tereza Koželuhová continue to make their mark. In 2025, Czechia will have record representation on the LET—clear evidence of a strong and growing golf culture.

Today, Czechia boasts over 120 golf courses and almost 53,000 registered golfers, overseen by a very progressive Czech Golf Association. Courses such as Albatross, PGA National Oaks, Karlštejn, Mariánské Lázně and Čeladná have all hosted DP World Tour events, underlining the quality and variety on offer.

The HotelPlanner Tour has also visited Kunětická Hora, Kaskáda Golf Resort, and Royal Beroun, the latter of which has additionally hosted a Ladies European Tour event. These aren’t hidden gems—they’re proven championship venues.

Much of the appeal of golf in Czechia lies in its connection to nature. Courses are set among forests, rolling countryside and mountain backdrops, encouraging an active, outdoor lifestyle. There’s also a strong sporting culture, and I can’t help but feel that the hand-eye coordination and competitiveness ingrained through sports like ice hockey translate naturally into golf.

So, why should Irish golfers consider Czechia?

First and foremost: value. Green fees and high-end accommodation are significantly lower than comparable destinations in Western Europe, without compromising on quality. You can play championship courses and stay in luxury resorts for a fraction of what you might expect elsewhere.

The variety of landscapes is another standout. From the wooded hills of Bohemia to the vineyards and mountains of Moravia, golfers encounter elevation changes, water hazards, bold bunkering and engaging course designs that keep every round interesting.

Golf in Czechia pairs beautifully with culture and history. Many courses sit close to medieval towns, spa resorts, castles—most famously Karlštejn Castle—and UNESCO World Heritage sites. A golf trip here isn’t just about 18 holes; it’s about great food, local beer, spa experiences and unforgettable sightseeing.

The infrastructure is excellent. Courses are immaculately maintained, resorts offer seamless stay-and-play packages, dining standards are high, and English is widely spoken at major venues. Practice facilities and academies are also first-class.

While golf is relatively young in Czechia, having truly flourished since 1989, its progress has been remarkable. The country regularly hosts the D+D REAL Czech Masters on the DP World Tour and continues to invest heavily in the game.

Irish golfers will also appreciate the mix of course styles—from classic parkland layouts dating back to the early 20th century to modern championship designs featuring large, undulating greens and strategic elements reminiscent of Irish links golf.

Finally, the climate plays its part. A moderate continental climate means comfortable golf from spring through autumn, with warm, dry summers ideal for golf trips.

So the next time someone says, “I didn’t know there was golf in Czechia,” you can confidently reply:

There is—and it might just be one of Europe’s best-kept golfing secrets.
