Cracks Appearing in LIV Golf

Well, well, well. The golf transfer market is very much in full flow.

During the LIV “close” season, Thomas Detry, Elvis Smylie, and Victor Perez have joined the breakaway tour, replacing familiar names such as Henrik Stenson, Andy Ogletree, and Mito Pereira (now retired).

However, the real headline is Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour. Commentators have long speculated that Koepka was never fully comfortable on LIV, and his decision to return — despite still having one year remaining on his LIV contract — appears to confirm those suspicions.

The PGA Tour has also left the door open for Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cameron Smith to return this season, although that offer expires on 2 February. Whether any of them will take it remains to be seen. That said, recent reactions from Rahm and DeChambeau when questioned about their futures on LIV have been telling.

Adding further intrigue, Patrick Reed has confirmed in an interview with The Telegraph’s James Corrigan that he would accept a similar offer to Koepka’s, should one be made. The bigger question is how welcome Reed would be back on the PGA Tour — and what penalties or compromises he might have to accept.

At this point, it seems increasingly clear that a partnership between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour is unlikely ever to materialise. Inadvertently or not, the PGA Tour appears to have played the long game — and may now be winning the war. There are several factors at play, but in my view, the decision of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to remain loyal to the PGA Tour has been pivotal.

Jon Rahm

By recruiting Koepka back, the PGA Tour has sent a clear message: there is a pathway home for LIV players. Any such deals, however, will almost certainly be handled on a case-by-case basis, largely dependent on a player’s popularity and standing within the professional game.

So, what now for LIV Golf?

In my opinion, the defection of either Bryson DeChambeau or Jon Rahm back to the PGA Tour would trigger a terminal decline for LIV by the end of 2026. It may also mark the beginning of a formal team competition running alongside the PGA Tour’s regular season.

The next two weeks promise to be fascinating.

What do you think — is this the beginning of the end for LIV Golf, or just another twist in a rapidly changing professional game? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
